This show is a benefit concert going on Friday, November 4, 2011 at 7 Stages Theater (1105 Euclid Ave.) Doors open at 9pm with political art and cartoons in the lobby by local artist Tom Ferguson. Music and spoken word starts at 10pm and will go until late.

"Featured musical performers on the main stage include Amul 9, BLCTXT, Bryson Green, No¢ents, Nutbush, Sewicida, Shabaka 2012 and The Subliminator. Revolutionary spoken word performances by Icewurm Jones and Myster Stique. Street performances by Critter Quinn, John B. and the Well-Dressed Homeless, Waldo and others. The DJ and MC for the event is DJ Supercrunk. This is an all ages show and the suggested donation is $10. Proceeds will go to the Occupy Atlanta legal fund. Awesomeness doesn't even begin to describe the night we had. King I Divine, Illastrate, J Haze, AJ, Senor Kaos and some other Atlanta family were in attendance too.

History Repeats Itself | Robots of Brixton (Video)

Strolling through Vimeo subscriptions today I found this well done animated film entitled Robots of Brixton. I don't want to say too much about it but what I will tell you is that it came out 2 months ago, before the rioting in the UK earlier this August.

Here is the description from the director/creator Kibwe Tavares:

Brixton has degenerated into a disregarded area inhabited by London's new robot workforce - robots built and designed to carry out all of the tasks which humans are no longer inclined to do. The mechanical population of Brixton has rocketed, resulting in unplanned, cheap and quick additions to the skyline.

The film follows the trials and tribulations of young robots surviving at the sharp end of inner city life, living the predictable existence of a populous hemmed in by poverty, disillusionment and mass unemployment. When the Police invade the one space which the robots can call their own, the fierce and strained relationship between the two sides explodes into an outbreak of violence echoing that of 1981.

I Don't Know | About 'Otis'

Maybe I'm crazy (9 out of 10 doctors would agree) but for some reason today Slum Villages' 'I Don't Know' popped into my head.

As soon as I began to sing along and recite the James Brown adlibs chopped into the beat I said, "HELL NAW!!!" For some that don't understand, I'm comparing Jay-Z and Kanye Wests' 'Otis' and Slum Villages' 'I Don't Know'. 'Otis' contains vocal samples of 'Try A Little Tenderness' by Otis Redding;

'I Don't Know' contains vocal samples of 'Make It Funky prts. 1&2', 'Get Up (I Feel Like Being A) Sex Machine' and damn near EVERY adlib/callout by James Brown to his band. Now I actually enjoy 'Otis', but the point I'm making is this: if Dilla hadn't given us the classic that is 'I Don't Know' there wouldn't be a beat for Kanye to try to one up in 2011. As I said, call me crazy, but that's just my perspective.

Traneing in on the Traneumentary

Saturday morning I awoke in search of some ideas for my new project. Within my search I stumbled upon something with John Coletrane's name titled, 'Traneumentary.' New to my eyes and ears, I just decided to click and go further down the rabbit hole. What I found was HEAVY. Mister Joseph Vella is the creator/producer of the project which started back in January 2007. I'll let him explain what Traneumentary is:

"The Traneumentary is an audio podcast series celebrating the artistry and recordings of John Coltrane. In April 1998 I was 13 and I just got some extra money from my mom to buy the new Goodie Mob LP

Still Standing

I walked (well, I RAN) into Media Play and to my surprise I bought the very last copy that was on the display. From the look of the packaging down to the sound of the LP, I was in utter amazement. On the inside of the LP Khujo Goodie had what he liked to call a 'Slumtionary' which outlined certain slang used in Atlanta and throughout the LP. The cover had the Goodie Mob logo changed a bit with a man hung in the 'O'. A leafless tree covered the CD itself:

(I think I remember Cee-Lo in a Rap City interview getting a tattoo of this tree.)

In my eyes, this tree symbolized strength in any season: it is still standing no matter what happens. Fast forward to today, July 2011 on the Marta headed to work. The title track Still Standing is playing and I am reminded how much I enjoyed Cee-Lo Goodie's verse.

Still Standing is another classic in the Goodie Mob catalog. It is also a corner stone in my music collection; I do not go one year without listening to it since I bought it. Back to Cee-Lo's verse: it is the best verse on the LP to me. Check it out below and while you're at it, go cop your version of Still Standing.

This wheel was damn near bigger than my car door itself and I managed to come out scar-less from a shower of plexiglass.

I'm STILL picking out shards of glass from my pockets, shoes, even had some in my ears.

Right now I'm going about my life as I normally would but I can't help reflect on the Final Destination-type French kiss with death I had.

Tuesday, March 28 2000: I was 15 years old.

Come to think of it, I JUST turned 25 so that makes this memory exactly ten years old.
*Flavor Flav voice* WAAAAAAAAAAW.
After hearing Common's verse on "Respiration" by Black Star I did some digging and found his third album, "One Day It'll All Make Sense" produced by his main producer NO ID.
Once I had heard that his follow up, "Like Water For Chocolate" was coming out I saved all my money and made sure that I would be at my local Media Play RIGHT after school.
I was already geeked that Com collaborated with DJ Primer for "6th Sense" so I, like any kid at the time that proudly wore the badge of "backpacker", expected to hear some NO ID beats.
But by the time I got to "Doonit" I was into a whole 'nother universe of sonics.

Enter:

Jay Dee

"Like Water For Chocolate" was my very first introduction to J Dilla, known then as Jay Dee.
Needless to say that I never got any homework done that night I bought LWFC.
I made it my bidniss, as my granddaddy would say, to wake up every morning to "Heat" and "Cold Blooded" and go to bed with, in my opinion the BEST song on LWFC, "Nag Champa."
Yes, yes y'all I absorbed this album as a piece of my consciousness, weaving it's rhythms into the fabric of my life so that I could escape through it in my dreams.
After hearing Dilla's work on LWFC I did more research for his material.
I could only get my hands on certain things so my next purchase was

Slum Village's "Fantastic Vol. 2"

Now to be honest, I did not understand this album at the time it dropped.
The beats were so raw but the rhymes were wack to me; well, except for Dilla's verses.
After a long discussion with my man Marcel (whom I credit for putting me on to soooo many Dilla rarities) I finally understood that most of the rhymes were freestyled; so I gave it another listen and I SWEAR to you I know EVERY word.
Where "LWFC" taught me to hit hard lyrically and write subject matter for songs "Fantastic Vol. 2" taught me how to create a certain vibe in a session to bring it to a record.

Fast forward to Tuesday, February 7th 2006: I had just turned 21 and waltzed out of Tower Records with "Donuts" in my hands.
Again, I didn't really understand the album.
I read about it on Okayplayer but I didn't expect it to have NO rhymes on it; this is the first time I heard a beat tape.
The more research I did on Donuts the more I understood it, as well as the more I played it, the more I liked it.
Illastrate recently told me how some beats were crafted from the intro, hook, verse and outro of the sample; I also read that Dilla tried to actually speak through certain beats to any MC that 'got' where you were supposed to rhyme at.
My favorite Donuts are "Last Donut Of The Night" and "Stop!"
"Stop!" stood out to me because of how Dilla flipped the Dionne Warrick sample, and after hearing Just Blaze flip it on Usher's "Confessions" I was exposed to yet another way of translating perspective to a listener.
A few days later would bring the sad news of Dilla's passing on February 10th 2006.
I found myself in a 2 hour phone conversation with Marcel about the legacy this man has.

Sunday, February 7th 2010:

When it comes to music it's Dilla's work ethic that inspires and motivates me the most-the man just never stopped working.
On his deathbed he was crafting Donuts and other music.
While he was stricken with Lupus and bound to a wheelchair, he did shows like
"Who stoppin me?!"
Every time I open a conversation with Dilla as a topic with anyone, I learn more new things about this man.
Thumbing through every memories as a youth I realize that Dilla's music is there as a soundtrack of sorts.
This is where Dilla changed my life: with music.

The good ol' boys down at NASA don't wanna leave things on the moon be.
Makes me feel like they've been kicking it too hard with the folks over at FEMA.

When news reported of the discovery of ice on the dark side of the moon surfaced I kinda had a feeling something stoopid was gonna go down.

And here you have it: some of the smartest minds in the world, rocket scientists, astronauts, marine biologists, chemists, mathematicians, scientific engineers etc. find some ice on another planet and their answer, their light-bulb, is to send a damn missile to the moon to find water.

Their quest for water is backed by proof of other life forms existing, which is cool with me.
But when was the last time you decided to step on an anthill just to see how many ants there were in it?
Exactly, you didn't.
So tell me why we didn't get to vote on this as a planet?
It's my moon just as it is yours.
Why exactly did we not hear about "Operation: Duck Hunt With The Moon" in the media as much as we heard from Kanye bitching about Beyonce's snub?
I mean I don't know about you guys but, the moon is pretty important to me.
Couldn't something SERIOUSLY go wrong?

David Banner + 9th Wonder = Something Is Wrong/RIP Derrion Albert

Since the news broke of the young brother Derrion Albert from Chicago last week, people haven't really been discussing the event.

I myself don't watch any news outlets or any television for that matter.
But when I heard the news through Nas' open letter to the young black men of Chicago, I honestly didn't know what to think.
I then find out that there is video footage of the killing [which I will NOT post here. This is not U-fucking-FC. Watching that is some sick shit.] and that made my skin crawl 1000 ways to the sun.
You have to realize what's sick about it is that someone decided to sit back and watch through a camera lens while another human being was being attacked; AND they had the nerve to post it and make it viral. I just did a search on YouTube and I'm somewhat relieved that the footage is taken down; but not over at the Fox website though, oh no. News Corp is too wealthy to care about Derrion's mother's feelings nor do they have respect for him by not posting the footage.
Another reality of the situation is that Darrion's death is only one story that made it out the many deaths that go on in the Southside Chicago [or anywhere for that matter] on a horribly regular basis.
The truth of the matter is that our youth are pawns in a game: no knowledge of self, no culture, no guidance-no love.
I know, I know, there are MANY fucked up things that are going on now where no one has a camera to send it to YouTube; but this is where my emotions got captured today:
A young, innocent black boy's life was taken like an animal by his peers.

Ten Things You're Not Supposed to Know about the Swine Flu Vaccine

Let's not beat around the bush on this issue: The swine flu vaccines now being prepared for mass injection into infants, children, teens and adults have never been tested and won't be tested before the injections begin. In Europe, where flu vaccines are typically tested on hundreds (or thousands) of people before being unleashed on the masses, the European Medicines Agency is allowing companies to skip the testing process entirely.

And yet, amazingly, people are lining up to take the vaccine, absent any safety testing whatsoever. When the National Institutes of Health in the U.S. announced a swine flu vaccine trial beginning in early August, it was inundated with phone calls and emails from people desperate to play the role of human guinea pigs. The power of fear to herd sheeple into vaccine injections is simply amazing...

Back in Europe, of course, everybody gets to be a guinea pig since no testing will be done on the vaccine at all. Even worse, the European vaccines will be using adjuvants -- chemicals used to multiply the potency of the active ingredients in vaccines.

Notably, there is absolutely no safety data on the use of adjuvants in infants and expectant mothers -- the two groups being most aggressively targeted by the swine flu vaccine pushers. The leads us to the disturbing conclusion that the swine flu vaccine could be a modern medical disaster. It's untested and un-tried. Its ingredients are potentially quite dangerous, and the adjuvants being used in the European vaccines are suspected of causing neurological disorders.

Paralyzed by vaccines
I probably don't need to remind you that in 1976, a failed swine flu vaccine caused irreparable damage to the nervous systems of hundreds of people, paralyzing many. Medical doctors gave the problem a name, of course, to make it sound like they knew what they were talking about: Guillain-Barre syndrome. (Notably, they never called it "Toxic Vaccine Syndrome" because that would be too informative.)

But the fact remains that doctors never knew how the vaccines caused these severe problems, and if the same event played out today, all the doctors and vaccine pushers would undoubtedly deny any link between the vaccines and paralysis altogether. (That's what's happening today with the debate over vaccines and autism: Complete denial.)

In fact, there are a whole lot of things you'll never be told by health authorities about the upcoming swine flu vaccine. For your amusement, I've written down the ten most obvious ones and published them below.

Ten things you're not supposed to know about the swine flu vaccine
(At least, not by anyone in authority...)

#1 - The vaccine production was "rushed" and the vaccine has never been tested on humans. Do you like to play guinea pig for Big Pharma? If so, line up for your swine flu vaccine this fall...

#2 - Swine flu vaccines contain dangerous adjuvants that cause an inflammatory response in the body. This is why they are suspected of causing autism and other neurological disorders.

#3 - The swine flu vaccine could actually increase your risk of death from swine flu by altering (or suppressing) your immune system response. There is zero evidence that even seasonal flu shots offer any meaningful protection for people who take the jabs. Vaccines are the snake oil of modern medicine.

#4 - Doctors still don't know why the 1976 swine flu vaccines paralyzed so many people. And that means they really have no clue whether the upcoming vaccine might cause the same devastating side effects. (And they're not testing it, either...)

#5 - Even if the swine flu vaccine kills you, the drug companies aren't responsible. The U.S. government has granted drug companies complete immunity against vaccine product liability. Thanks to that blanket immunity, drug companies have no incentive to make safe vaccines, because they only get paid based on quantity, not safety (zero liability).

#6 - No swine flu vaccine works as well as vitamin D to protect you from influenza. That's an inconvenient scientific fact that the U.S. government, the FDA and Big Pharma hope the people never realize.

#7 - Even if the swine flu vaccine actually works, mathematically speaking if everyone else around you gets the vaccine, you don't need one! (Because it can't spread through the population you hang with.) So even if you believe in the vaccine, all you need to do is encourage your friends to go get vaccinated...

#8 - Drug companies are making billions of dollars from the production of swine flu vaccines. That money comes out of your pocket -- even if you don't get the jab -- because it's all paid by the taxpayers.

#9 - When people start dying in larger numbers from the swine flu, rest assured that many of them will be the very people who got the swine flu vaccine. Doctors will explain this away with their typical Big Pharma logic: "The number saved is far greater than the number lost." Of course, the number "saved" is entirely fictional... imaginary... and exists only in their own warped heads.

#10 - The swine flu vaccine centers that will crop up all over the world in the coming months aren't completely useless: They will provide an easy way to identify large groups of really stupid people. (Too bad there isn't some sort of blue dye that we could tag 'em with for future reference...)

The lottery, they say, is a tax on people who can't do math. Similarly, flu vaccines are a tax on people who don't understand health.

Eating Curry Fights Dementia

(NaturalNews) Regular consumption of curry could reduce the risk of Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia, according to a study conducted by researchers from Duke University and presented at the annual meeting of the Royal College of Psychiatrists.

"If you have a good diet and take plenty of exercise, eating curry regularly could help prevent dementia," researcher Murali Doraiswamy said.

Researchers conducted experiments on the effects of curcumin, a biologically active ingredient of the essential curry spice turmeric.

"There is very solid evidence that curcumin binds to plaques, and basic research on animals engineered to produce human amyloid plaques has shown benefits," Doraiswamy said. "You can modify a mouse so that at about 12 months its brain is riddled with plaques. If you feed this rat a curcumin-rich diet, it dissolves these plaques. The same diet prevented younger mice from forming new plaques."

Amyloid plaques and nerve fiber tangles are thought to be among the causative agents of the brain damage that produces the symptoms of dementia.

A clinical trial is currently underway at the University of California-Los Angeles to see if curcumin has the same benefits in human Alzheimer's patients as in mice. According to Doraiswamy, the evidence suggests that human beings would need to eat two to three meals of curry per week to lower their risk of dementia.

Because it would take more than 100 grams of curry powder to get enough curcumin to count as a clinical dose, scientists are exploring the possibility of developing a curcumin pill.

Doraiswamy warned, however, that even consuming massive amounts of curcumin could not compensate for a bad diet and sedentary lifestyle, two of the biggest risk factors for Alzheimer's disease.

Previous research has shown that curcumin also improves the symptoms of cancer and arthritis, and may help suppress the growth of body fat.

Courtesy of Polk County Jail When a rap he wrote as a teenager ended up on MySpace years later, Antavio Johnson found the police at his door—and now, he’s been sentenced to two years' hard time for a song lyric.

Soon after Harvard’s Henry Louis Gates was arrested after mouthing off to the police, charges of disorderly conduct against the feisty African-American professor were dropped like a hot potato in a firestorm of racial controversy. But consider the fate another African-American signifier who mouthed off to the police—this one, a hot-headed 20-year-old who, two weeks ago, was handed a two-year prison sentence for some rap lyrics he wrote when he was a teenager.

For all the protection afforded by the First Amendment, the Constitution doesn’t protect dangerous and offensive speech absolutely.

Antavio Johnson wrote “Kill Me a Cop,” a rap song threatening to murder two police officers he said had harassed him. The song announced: “Im'ma kill me a cop one day.” It called out two specific officers—one male, one female—by name, both of the Lakeland, Florida, Police Department, both of whom would be shot with a “Glock” in the “dome” if they ever “get my timing wrong.”

A couple of years later, Lakeland detectives researching gang life on the Internet found Johnson’s song on a MySpace page belonging to an entity called Hood Certified Entertainment. Already in jail for violating probation on a cocaine conviction, the now-20-year-old Johnson was convicted on two counts of a weirdly titled crime he had probably never heard of: “corruption by threat of public servant.”

Section 838.021of the Florida statutes makes it a third-degree felony to harm or threaten to harm public servants, their families, or the people they care about. The statute, which is designed to deter corruption and punish extortion, requires that threats be made "with the intent or purpose" to influence public servants' performance of their official responsibilities. In a 2007 case, a disorderly man was prosecuted under the statute for repeatedly asking to see the badges of undercover officers, but acquitted. In a 2008 case, another disorderly Florida man was prosecuted and acquitted under the statute, this one a DUI arrestee in handcuffs who threatened to slit the arresting officer's throat and beat his "ass" if the officer were to free him. The court concluded that the man's threats lacked the requisite intent to influence the officer. Merely threatening the life of an officer, even to his face, is not enough for conviction.

So did Johnson deserve a two-year sentence for some ill-conceived lyrics he wrote as a teenager? No. It’s outrageous. He is young and caught up in a culture that glorifies both violence and freedom of expression. The art of signifying by rhyme, the rapper’s medium of expression, incorporates the profane and transgressive vocabularies of violence, rebellion, racism, sexism, homophobia, and irreligiosity.

But the people arguing that all words set to song are protected by freedom of speech are wrong. The Florida chapter of the ACLU came out in Johnson’s defense: “We don’t punish for bad thoughts in America.” An op-ed in the Palm Beach Post warned: “Thought police, anyone?…Criminalizing Johnson's early, crude attempts at expression seems borderline unconstitutional and counterproductive.”

But these weren’t just “thoughts,” they were statements, and American law takes verbal injury seriously. For all the protection afforded by the First Amendment, the Constitution doesn’t protect dangerous and offensive speech absolutely. There is no unqualified freedom of speech to lie about a person—that constitutes “defamation.” There is no unqualified freedom of speech to publish private facts about people who aren’t newsworthy—that would be “invasion of privacy.” And there is no unqualified freedom of speech to make threats to do a person bodily harm—that amounts to what the common law calls “assault.”

If you can’t verbally assault, why should you be able to get away with threatening to kill? The answer is that you shouldn’t. The question is, what should the legal consequences be? Is civil liability enough? Should there be criminal liability as well? And if there is criminal liability, what should be the punishment? Should the punishment be more severe if the verbal threats target police officers? Should the punishment be less severe if the threats are made in a song published on the Internet rather than face-to-face?

If death threats are to be crimes as well as the civil wrongs we lawyers call torts, the punishments should be tailored to fit culpability. Perpetrators of verbal threats who have never lifted a finger against anyone do not deserve to be thrown into jail for two years. A $400 fine and a tongue lashing would be fairer—that’s the punishment a judge imposed on a wealthy white businessman in my neighborhood who took a dislike to my 12-year-old son, and threatened, to his face as he walked home from the school bus one day, to “fuck” him up if he ever went near his children.

As truly awful as it is, disrespecting police officers is not a wrong that it takes two years in jail to right. Nor is it clear that police officers deserve more protection from verbal assault than ordinary citizens. If the conditional threat Johnson made against the police had been made against the life of a 16-year-old girlfriend or a rival teen peer, he would not have been charged with a crime or sentenced to two years in jail. The old girlfriend or rival wouldn’t even have had strong civil assault cases. The kind of verbal threats the civil law considers wrongful are those that unconditionally threaten immediate bodily harm. “Someday, I’ll get you if you cross my path” isn’t an actionable threat at all.

We should be able to bring personal injury lawsuits against others who have intentionally defamed, invaded privacy, or verbally threatened us. We have to be able to deter and punish threats of young adults who show signs of being Columbine-style school shooters or terrorists. But it’s excessive to treat violent song lyrics in the context of youthful rapping as criminal offenses punishable by jail time.

Antavio Johnson warned the law not to get his “timing wrong.” It looks like they did anyway.

Yup, that's the title to the new Dem Franchize Boyz song with Lil'Wayne.
From what little information I gather about the song it was dropped a few weeks ago.
Now the reason I am posting this is because I need some discourse here people, Dem Franchize Boyz don't need me to help them with promotion.
As soon as I saw this title, I immediately felt like this song needed to be discussed.
Check my disposition: I am from the south. I was raised on southern Hip-Hop. I understand how we get down is kinda weird to some, but nevertheless, it's us.
I have friends that tell me they blame the south for the way commercial music is being made now, how they can't stand the way southern music scene is "dumbing down" the music industry now [in my opinion, the industry has been as dumb as nails since existence] and they we're all a bunch of monkeys with microphones-this, I don't agree with.
I can tell you what I do agree with: I agree with the fact that dance music has been around for ages and will continue to be popular just as long as humans want to shake their asses.
I agree with young folks who were at one point disadvantaged, getting their paper and being about business when given the opportunity to shine.
I agree with the making of good music with heart.
I don't agree with ignorance and real talk, I don't agree with this song.
Even though it's about cook-up, it just doesn't sit well with me.
Don't get it twist, I'm not looking for passages of Hemmingway and Edgar Allen Poe quotes from Dem Franchize Boyz, I've been bumping The Ecstatic by Mos Def for 2 weeks straight now.
I never even had a problem with Franchize at all, but I feel like this doesn't help us as a culture, as grown black folk nor as serious artists.
I respect Frachize Boyz, I have yet to have a hit like they have.
I don't know what it took for them to get to where they are so I don't undermine their grind.
But this is not progression folks, we REALLY don't need this right now.

Ecstatic About The Ecstatic...

Straight up-Mos Def's The Ecstatic is the BEST LP from any MC this year.
Don't believe me?
For the past year fans, supporters, listeners, the Internets-EVERYONE has been buzzing about this album.
Mos has had sporadic performances around the globe and any chance someone gets they've posted video of the newest songs.
This being his fourth album with a new label [Downtown Records/Atlantic] his sound is that of a soldier's homecoming, narrating stories of his whereabouts and travels, the future of the world, love and life.
The sonic backdrop is mainly provided by Madlib from the left coast; I actually remember when Kweli blogged about Mos working with Madlib over a year ago.

Other producers include Georgia Anne Muldrow, Oh No, Chad Hugo, Mr. Flash, Preservation, Mos Def himself and none other than the late great J Dilla.

The aforementioned Dilla production [entitled "History"] is a well recognized Dilla donut but Mos decided to tease us by adding Talib Kweli; this song, plus recent performances, are glimmers of light letting us know that a Black Star reunion album is sure to come, and come back with a force behind it.

Standout songs are: Priority, Pistola, Casa Bey, Audotorium [feat. Slick Rick!], History and Life In Marvelous Times.
Seeing Mos on Jimmy Fallon last night with The Roots made me more "Ecstatic" [cheesey, I know] about his album.

Now if we can just get him and Kweli to come on down to Atlanta for a show....

Today is Sunday and usually I take this time to reflect on what I've done this week and what I want to accomplish in the next week.
Jazz is usually the soundtrack for me when I do this and today I'm choosing to listen to my man man, John Coltrane:

There is nothing I can say that hasn't been said about this man and his craft.
What I can say is that he has been a constant inspiration to me as a person and as an artist.
His approach toward music is what I admire most.
A very simple man with complex ideas toward expressing himself not only in jazz but in music.
I would like to leave you with a performance of a song from Trane called "Alabama"

This song was written in reaction to the Alabama church bombing that occurred on September 15th 1963 that killed four young black girls.

Dr. Martin Luther King did speech at this funeral and Coltrane patterned his horn after King's voice for this song.

Hometown Heroes: Def Poets In The 4th Grade

I was at work yesterday when I saw this news coverage about these 4th graders in Rochester, NY who wrote their first poem.
Usually I don't watch the news but something about this moved me.
It is amazing to see what emotions and experiences are expressed when you give a child the "OK" to communicate through an art form.
I've done many a summer camp, classroom study and social project with kids and writing/art and the conclusion is that you always get that one or that group that blows you away.
If the American educational system was structured a little better [you know, more individuality, less pressure on the kids to become homogeneous] then we would have no fear about our future leaders of tomorrow.
I hate to get all preachy but this was worth sharing to you guys.

These kids witnessed an incident that has had a life long impression on them.
Now if they weren't told that they could express themselves, they may not have ever done it.
It sucks but these guys aren't the only ones going through situations like this.
